National Depression Screening

By | Anxiety, Food for thought | No Comments

Nico mentioned to me awhile ago when I was setting up Vivid that he thought that the word VIVID “calls up an image of being alive and vigorous, which I think we all should be, and that is what I hope for our clients to have vivid lives.”  This has been on my mind ever since and as I meet with each and everyone of my clients.

It is on my mind in particular as October 6 marks National Depression Screening day.  Statistics Canada notes that in 2012, 11 in every 100,000 people in Canada commit suicide.  The National Depression Screening website highlights that approximately 70% of people who commit suicide give a warning that they are contemplating ending their lives.

Depression is a treatable mental health disorder.  The National Depression Screening website, highlights some of the most common signs and symptoms of depression:

  • Changes in sleep habits and appetite
  • Poor Concentration
  • Loss of energy
  • Loss of interest in usual activities
  • Low self-esteem or feelings of worthlessness
  • Hopelessness or guilt
  • Recurring thoughts of death or suicide

If you or someone you know is experiencing signs and symptoms of depression, seek help.  It is possible to achieve wellness and health.  It is possible to live vigorous, vivid lives.
