Katie McLean
Registered Provisional Psychologist
My therapy space is designed to help you navigate life's challenges with openness, creativity, and if we're lucky, a touch of fun. My approach is rooted in authenticity, creativity, compassion, and understanding.
I embrace the 'yes and' philosophy, acknowledging that many things can be true at once. One can be anxious AND courageous. One can be grieving AND joyful. One can be confused AND confident.
In every step of my work, I am focused on creating a supportive and non-judgmental environment where clients can freely express themselves. Authenticity is one of my highest values, and in session with me I want you to feel safe to bring your whole self. I take an integrative approach, using elements from CBT, Internal Family Systems (IFS), humanistic and existential psychotherapies and other modalities. I am neurodiversity affirming, and consider anxiety and ADHD a few of my areas of expertise.
I work through an anti-oppressive lens, which means I believe therapy cannot exist outside of the contexts we live in. My goal is to promote healing and resilience while advocating for social justice and equity within the therapeutic relationship and beyond, and without ignoring the factors that make healing and resilience challenging.
I am Queer and Trans affirming, which means I celebrate the many ways gender and sexuality impact our human experience. 2SLGBTQ+ individuals and couples can feel safe and confident working with me. Queer politics, history, and culture are not things you will need to explain.
In my work with couples, I use Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). Using EFT, we can work together to identify the negative cycles that are present in your relationship, and work to build new patterns together.
I am a Registered Provisional Psychologist and I hold a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology from Yorkville University. Prior to this degree, I completed my Master of Education Degree from the University of Ottawa, and my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at the University of Guelph. Having been born and raised in Calgary, my time in Ontario left me deeply pining for the mountains and I am overjoyed to be back in Calgary. I love spending time hiking and road tripping with my family, and learning at every bend in the road.
